To begin with this topic, we will transcribe some of the papers we received at the forum about the urgent necessity in change the tree fern as a subtract due to the quickly disappearing of the Dicksonnia selowii. These works are the same showed in our Orchid News # 4 and some others added now.

In Brazil, the tree fern fiber is extracted in big amount, from the species that, besides not to be replanted in a big extent, grow very slowly.

The true tree fern, Dicksonia sellowiana (Presl.) Hook, is already rare. Since 1990, the Brazilian laws limit the tree fern cut but, as the government don't have an efficient control , the product remains still intensively commercialized in inside Brazil and international market. So, it's urgent to find some other substrate to plants cultivation.
