A new Brazilian natural hybrid of the Orchidaceae

Introduction
A natural hybrid of the Orchidaceae, genus Cattleya
Lindl., new to the Brazilian flora. The brothers Sávio and
Keko Caliman found this plant in Ibiraçu, Espírito
Santo.
A natural hybrid between Cattleya schilleriana Rchb.
f. and Cattleya harrisoniana Batem. ex Lindl., with intermediate
characteristics from those plants. Caespitose, epiphytic herb.
Rhizome short. Pseudobulbs bifoliate, 30.0 to
40.0 cm high and 0.7 to 1.0 cm in diameter. Two
coriaceous leaves, elliptic, 15.0 cm long and
4.5 cm wide. Inflorescence to 15.0 cm long, 3-
flowered. Dorsal sepal oblonglanceolate, 8.0 cm
long and 2.2 cm wide; lateral sepals falcate,
5.7 cm long and 2.4 cm wide; petals wide-falcate,
7.0 cm long and 3.0 cm wide; lip 3-lobate, 5.5
cm long and 5.2 cm wide; lateral lobes obovate
and midlobe reniform with retuse apex. Sepals
and petals green overlaid heavy brown-red except
at extreme margins and dotted with dark purple;
lateral lobes of the lip externally rose and internally
yellow, midline lip vein dark red; midlobe of
lip yellow at isthmus and purple over apex. Column
white, curved, 2.5 cm long; anther white, 0.4
cm long. Pollinia, 4, typical for the genus, yellow.

Etymology: Named for the brothers Sávio and
Keko Caliman who found this natural hybrid. |
Discussion
Caliman brothers found this natural hybrid a long time ago. They
knew when they collected the plant it was a hybrid. Recently they
have become more active in growing orchids and the orchid community
and shared their discovery. This plant is a clear example of a natural
hybrid between Cattleya harrisoniana Batem. ex Lindl. and
Cattleya schofieldiana Rchb. f., expressing phenotypic
qualities one would expect from both parents species. The two species
are found intermingle in the Ibiraçu region, where the hybrid
was found. |
