Genus Acacallis Lindley (Fol. Orch. Acacallis 1. 1853)
Etymology The name has a Greek origin and refers to a nymph who would be Apollo's lover.
Subtribe Zygopetalinae

This is a genus with bluish flowers and is typical of the Amazon region. Its area of occurrence covers Brazil, Colombia, Guyana, Venezuela and Peru, growing in shaded humid or swamped areas.
In 1876, Reichenbach unified the genera Aganisia Lindl. and Acacallis Lindl. and transferred Acacallis species to Aganisia. This unification was not unanimously accepted by the researchers but Robert Dressler, for example, adopted it in his classification. This is a genus which still has many doubts about the correct identification of its species, however, nowadays, four species are considered as valid and a species still reminds as dubia.
For Guido Pabst (in Orchidaceae Brasilienses, 1975-1977), only two species would be valid: A cyanea Lindl. and A fimbriata (Rchb. f.) Schltr. Acacallis coerulea Rchb. f. l876 would be a synonym of Acacallis fimbriata (Rchb. f.) Schltr. and Acacallis hoehnei Schltr. and Aganisia coerulea Rchb. f. l886 synonym of Acacallis cyanea Lindl.
K. Senghas first recognized 3 species (A cyanea Lindl. A fimbriata (Rchb. f) Schltr. and A coeruela (Rchb. f.) Schltr. (in Sounderabdruck aus Schlechter, 19. Tribus: Maxillarieae, 60 Subtribus: Zygopetalinae, l993).
However, in 1996, he concluded that Acacallis hoehnei Schltr. is a valid species (Revista Orquidário Volume 10 nº 4, "A redescoberta de Acacallis hoehnei"- Waldemar Scheliga translation). He also said that his studies suggests that there still are two more species: A coerulea (Rchb. f.) Schltr. and A oliveriana (Rchb. f. ) Schltr.
Marcos Antonio Campacci (Revista Brasil Orquídeas - Ano 1 - nº 1- 2002) considered four valid species:
Acacallis cyanea
Lindl. - Acacallis fimbriata (Rchb. f.) Schltr. - Acacallis hoehnei (Hoehne) Schltr. - Acacallis rosariana V. P. Castro & J. B. F. Silva

Hoehne informed that this plant is referred to the north of Brazil, without exact location and has ben found, in l935, in the interior of the Peru. The material he worked with has been collected in Peru, at 260m altitude.

Brazil (States of Acre, Amazonas, Mato Grosso, Para , Rondonia and Roraima), Colombia and Venezuela. It grows in the "igarapés and igapós", in shaded places and next to the water sources, staying many times submerged for many months. The inflorescence can bear up to 10 long lasting flowers and simultaneously opened (Francisco Miranda, Orquídeas da Amazônia) .
According to Hoehne, the plants can have a 5m long rhizome.
