Dendrobium species and their hybrids grow vigorously in the sunny area, exceeding 1 m in height, releasing their long flower stalks, as well as specimens of Sobralia, Vanilla, Spathoglottis sp. and Arundina graminofolia alba. |
To reproduce the way Phalaenopsis thrives in nature, screens were created that keep the pots tilted, preventing the accumulation of water in the central part of these plants. |
In the outdoor area and distributed through the beautiful gardens, the species are cultivated on trees or rocks. In these gardens, species of such diverse origins coexist harmoniously, sharing the same space, in the same way of vegetating. A beautiful specimen of Grammaotphyllum speciosum, grows on the rock. Considered as the largest orchid in the world, it can weigh tons and reach the size of a tree. It is originally from Southeast Asia where it grows as an epiphyte or lithophyte. Cyrtopodium glutiniferum is a native species that occurs in the states of Bahia Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo, in rocky outcrop areas and the genus is limited to tropical America. |
Including the orchid house, the site occupies an area of 405,325.62 m2 and houses around 3,500 species of native and exotic tropical plants. Its collections are spread throughout the gardens and in specific places, several nurseries called Sombral. The Sombral Margaret Mee houses an anthurium collection and a bromeliad collection. Several illustrations by Margaret Mee were made at SRBM due to the great friendship that united the two artists. The impressive collection of Araceae is housed, in part, in Sombral Graziela Barroso. |
