Gomesa pectoralis (better known as Oncidium marshallianum) is an Atlantic Forest species restricted to the states of Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro, occurring between 900 and 1,500 m altitude.
The inclusion of this plant in the Critically Endangered category - was justified by the CNCFlora project (National Center for the Conservation of Flora), on 05.08.2012, by Danielli Cristina Kutschenko due to the suspicion that there are only 50 individuals in the largest subpopulation and that there will be a population reduction than 80% of individuals mature in the next 10 years, if the intensive pressure of collection does not cease. Because of its high ornamental value, it is intensively collected by collectors in its flowering season. |

This species has confirmed occurrence in the Atlantic Forest domains in the southeastern states, Paraná and Santa Catarina and has a possible occurrence in the state of Bahia. The inclusion of this plant in the category EN - Endangered - was justified by the CNCFlora project (National Center for the Conservation of Flora), on 20.04.2012, by Pablo Viany Prieto because it is a very ornamental species with restricted distribution, presenting a relatively specific habitat, occurring exclusively in very humid locations in well-preserved areas of Montane Forests. It is suspected that the species has been suffering a decline in the number of mature individuals due to the indiscriminate collection of plants for ornamental purposes.
