Orquídeas no Jardim

After two years in which it was suspended due to necessary structural work and, above all, the COVID pandemic, the traditional exhibition "Orquídeas no Jardim" is also back at the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden.

Since 2003, two orchid exhibitions have been held there per year, organized by OrquidaRio – Orquidófilos Associados.

Rhyncholaeliocattleya Pastoral “Innocence”
This year, the theme plant of the exhibition is the Rhyncholaeliocattleya Pastoral “Innocence”, a classic of hybrids, created by Rolf Altenburg, one of the pioneers of orchid hybridization in Brazil and has a curious history.
Mr. Rolf was passionate about opera and classical music, which he listened to while tending to his orchids.
When the plant created by him first flowered, he was listening to the 6th. Beethoven's Symphony, known as Pastoral and so he decided to honor the composer by giving the name "Pastoral" to his creation.
With magnificent flowers with perfect shapes, with a fringed lip, she conquered the world and received and still receives several awards in the exhibitions she participates.
As in any cross between orchids, flowers of different shades appeared, the completely white ones (called albas), the semi albas, the pink ones and the 'Innocence' which is white with a small blemish in the center (called lip). However, 'Innocence' is the best known and practically the only one that can be found on the market. It always blooms in autumn and is a vigorous plant.

Several nurseries, both from the state of Rio and from São Paulo and Paraná, participated in this exhibition.
In its stands you can see the most attractive orchids, especially the hybrids with large and fragrant flowers, in the most diverse colors, from white to dark red, as well as yellow and green flowers.
Three associations were also present: OrquidaRio, Assom and Comar, as well as the Orquidário do Jardim Botânico, which provided the public with the opportunity to discover interesting and little-seen species.

This year, the winning plant was Fredclarkeara After Dark, by Karl Kraemer, an ASSON associate.

Testimony by Rita Sena, president of OrquidaRio

The pandemic has deprived us of many things, one of which is the traditional Orchid Exhibition in the Botanical Garden of RJ, which usually gathers a large audience, as it sensitizes family and friends of those who cultivate or simply appreciate this wonderful flower.
For OrquidaRio, each event is a new challenge as it requires a lot of effort to make the logistics work.
Every detail is carefully discussed and planned in this partnership so that, in the end, the public receives the best from us and returns home with plants, souvenirs, supplies and with notions about growing and caring for their plants.
It is true that for this we need divine help, as an open-air event has its risks, but in the end, everything or almost everything worked out.
Without rain it would have been better, but the satisfaction of seeing friends was worth all the risks.
In addition, it was the first Exhibition of the new OrquidaRio Board, which promises a new effort in the next edition
